Subject: The Breeders
Hi all,
News from www.nme.uk.co...
THE BREEDERS' 'will-they-won't-they-get -together-again' saga
continued this weekwith news that Kim Deal has cancelled a series of
News - BREEDERS (s2 of 6)
Amps dates, including Irishsupport slots with the Sex Pistols, to
concentrate on working with her originaloutfit. In NME last week,
her sister Kelley Deal said there was noguarantee The Breeders would
work together again and that nobody would "give ashit" if they never
again put out anything new. The Amps and Breeders' recordlabel, 4AD,
said the The Breeders situation was "up in the air".
"We don't really know what is going on, but Kelley's comments last
week may havebeen simple conjecture. A Breeders album could possibly
come out without Kelley. It does not need Kelley to make it a
Breeders album. It's unfortunate that gigshave been cancelled
because they are all very high-profile dates, but that's theway it
goes." The cancelled Amps dates are T In The Park (July 14),
Belfast, supporting the Pistols (17), Dublin Point, supporting the
Pistols (18), DublinMean Fiddler (19), Phoenix Festival (20) and
London Highbury Garage

Subject: IMPORTANT NOTE regarding Lysator
** IMPORTANT NOTE **
Lysator (the Internet provider where this mailing list and web-pages reside)
------- will move their equipment starting June 26th (at 6pm CET) (that's
on wednesday this week) and they plan to have everything back up
again (and I say again, _plan to_) the following weekend, that is
June 29th or June 30th.
If you read the previous note regarding this, you remember that I said
that _all messages sent to a Lysator-address_ (to the mailing list, to
me, etc) will be _saved_ (though there will probably be problems with
that too for an hour or two during the move) and distributed when
everything is back up again.
* So, either you stop sending mail to the mailing list or me for these
few days, or you continue to send mail, hoping for the best. This is
entirely up to you. But remember that I will not be able to reply to
any messages before June 29th or 30th (earliest date).

Subject: An Introduction
Hej Alla,
I'm new to the list so I thought an introduction should be in order.
My name is Raymond Frake and I am a graphic designer in Chicago who will soon
be moving to Sweden on a permanent basis. This is a good thing since a huge
amount of my favorite music comes from Sweden. I own over 50 cds from
Swedish bands and happy to say none of them include Ace of Bass or Roxette.
Some of my favorites do include:
Kent, Eggstone, Popsicle, Wannadies, Bob Hund, Hardy Nilsson, Mouth, Singer,
Souls, and Stina Nordenstam.
I have to brag that I was probably the first American to buy Kents first CD.
I was so blown away by it I told everyone I knew about them and then later
got to interview Joakim Berg at Hultsfred for a college radio station. I've
created a Kent homepage that can be found at:
http://www.nada.kth.se/~d94-hhe/kent/
I'm desperately looking for anyone who can do guitar tabs for Kent songs and
I also have a review page where fans can review Kents concerts, videos,
singles, albums, etc. You will be given full credit for anything you
contribute.
My own personal homepage is at......
http://www.student.nada.kth.se/~d94-hhe/ray/
..........If anyone wishes to check that out
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to reading the posts from this mailing
list. The best music in the world is coming from Scandinavia (and especially
Sweden) these days.

Subject: Virna Lindt
Hi all
Another 'does anyone know anything about' question.
I've got an album by Virna Lindt, called 'Play/Record', which she released in
the UK on the Compact label in 1985 - I've also got a couple of singles of hers
on a Compact sampler from 83 or so. Does anyone know if she released any other
albums, in the UK or in Sweden? And was she a big star over there? I have this
very vague memory of her hosting the Eurovision Song Contest one year, although
that may just have ben a bad dream of course.
Anyone who doesn't know her music, she's a real archetype of Swedish pop,
perfect, pure, intelligent... she should have been a huge success, but alas
never had a hit single or album here.
Thanks
Mo

Just two small notes:
* for new subscribers: the Internet provider (lysator) where this mailing

this week, and therefor, no messages to/from this mailing list will

distributed. They plan to have everything ready on June 30th (sunday).

Subject: Finnish indie tape - comments
I just got the tape, and i liked some of the stuff. Favourites were:
Coo - a mix between Ride and Charlatans, with repetive guitars that sticks
to your mind. One of the best/most memorable tracks.
Jimi Tenor - instrumental jazz funk with a monosynth feel, a bit like those
computer demos you listened to on the c-64. Hip stuff.
Candy Darling - _very_ scandinavian singing style, almost over-articulating
with deliberately cheesy accent. A mix between The Fall, Broder Daniel and
Hardy Nilsson. These guys must be good live?!
22 Pistepirkko - i'm beginning to like these guys. The song on hte tape,
Birdy, interrupts in the middle ofr one minute of bird noises. Also best
studio quality of the bands of this tape. Maybe 22P are so big they're not
indie anymore?
I've passed it on, but if someone wants to join the chain... Chief, whaddya say?

Dear Indie Music Fan:
RPM USA--Baltimore-based label--is seeking submissions for its
upcoming compilation FUZZY LOGIC. If you're into or influenced by
any of the following--Gumball, '60s garage rock, the Swingin'
Neckbreakers, Dinosaur Jr., the Ramones, Neil Young and Crazy
Horse ("Zuma" and "Live Rust"), and Jack Logan (at his fuzziest)--
then send us a cassette (CDs and vinyl welcome, too) with three
songs. All songs must be original and 3:30 minutes or less.
Our debut release--"the three-minute revolution"--is due out late
July/early August. It is a 25-band 25-song power pop compilation
featuring 9 local bands/artists including the Jennifers, the
put-outs, Mudwheel, and the Marmalades as well as 16 other bands
from across the country including one band (The Bardots) from England.
For FUZZY LOGIC, we're looking for a crunchier, high-octane garage
sound.
If you have any questions, please e-mail me.
Thanks for your interest.

Okay, did the one who's got the Finnish Indie Tape catch that?
I think it would be a good idea if each person on the chain(s) reports
to the mailing list when they get the tape(s) - that way we always know
how far the tape has come, and who to contact when people want to be
added to the chain(s) as well. Does anyone disagree with me?
-----
On a side-note: Magnus (3rd on the Swedish Indie Tape Chain) thought
that that chain was way too long and made an extra copy of the tape -
and changed the chain into two chains.
This means that there are two Swedish Indie tape chains - one that
only reaches within Sweden (I think it is the original tape), with
Ludvig Borgne as last person on it, and the other that goes abroad
(starting with Kimmo in Finland), with Olli Sotamaa as last person
on it. The list of people on the chain has also been split into two
lists, each list traveling with the each correct tape.
Everyone got this? Good! This also means that Ludde will send the
tape back to me (Ludde is that okay with you or do you want to
do something else?), though I don't know what Magnus wants to do
with his tape when Olli is finished with it. Magnus?

Hi Again!
Vilstafestival takes place in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
On friday 5/7 it has the best Indie line up Sweden have at the moment:
nice stereolabish SUPERSWIRLS, techno bastards MOL, Indiegirls favuorite
KENT and the very powerful YVONNE.
Poet Thomas Walhstrom will open the festival with his poetry show at 1800,
Bukovski meets acid Jazz is what you get from him, quite good.
Then I think metalheads CHAIN OF SALVATION (spinal tap) and eurodisco dance act
ALTERNATIVE COLOURS will perform before nice stereolabish SUPERSWIRLS, techno
bastards MOL, Indiegirls favuorite KENT and the very powerful YVONNE takes
the stage. YVONNE play at 2300 and KENT plays at midnight.
I've been told there's giong to be a dance tent with local DJs, If its so,
they play the HOUSE thing for you til late.
It costs 100skr, you by the ticket at the site. It's also easy to camp at
the site and if the weather is nice you should bring your swimming gear.
The site is a 10 or 15 minutes walk from the Train station and easy to find.
Vilstafestival then continue on Saturday with ULF LUNDELL and friends (this
costs around 250skr) and thats all I know about Saturday.
YVONNE will only play four more shows this year, so catch em at VILSTA
FESTIVAL, DALAROCK 12/7, ARVIKAFESTIVAL 20/7 and the last one at LOLLIPOP
sthlm 26/7. Check out their new 'Modern Love' T-shirt
KENT continue playing all through summer.
SUPERSWIRLS will record their full length debut in August but take time out
for the EMMABODA festival.
MOL is releasing stuff soon................
Any questions?
See ya!/TOTTE

Subject: Re: Finnish indie tape - comments
Hello there,
and thanks to everybody who has commented on the Finnish tape. It's
nice to see that different people have liked different songs on it.
According to Jan Sundstrom:
* Coo - a mix between Ride and Charlatans, with repetive guitars that sticks
* to your mind. One of the best/most memorable tracks.
Watch out for their debut EP which should be out any day now.
The new version of "Fiat 600" will rock at least 10 times more!
* Jimi Tenor - instrumental jazz funk with a monosynth feel, a bit like those
* computer demos you listened to on the c-64. Hip stuff.
Great that somebody out there digs this kind of bizarre stuff. You
should try to find his "Europa" CD which is full of cheap synths and
70's spy/soft porn movie soundtrack parodies/pastiches; it's the
kitschiest thing on this side of the globe.
* Candy Darling - _very_ scandinavian singing style, almost over-articulating
* with deliberately cheesy accent. A mix between The Fall, Broder Daniel and
* Hardy Nilsson. These guys must be good live?!
Indeed - on a good night they are one of the best live bands in this
country. Whatever happened to the full-lenght album that was supposed
to be released?
* 22 Pistepirkko - i'm beginning to like these guys. The song on hte tape,
* Birdy, interrupts in the middle ofr one minute of bird noises. Also best
* studio quality of the bands of this tape. Maybe 22P are so big they're not
* indie anymore?
Well, technically they haven't been 'indie' since 1988. Although they
have now started a record label of their own (so far they have
re-released some of their oldest albums I think); maybe they will
release their next albums themselves, who knows. In case it has not
been mentioned yet, they relased a remix (!) album some time ago,
called "Zipcode" featuring remixes by Utah Saint, Martin Rev (of
Suicide), some Norwegian technomeisters and a number of other folks
from around the world. There is also a Larry & The Lefthanded cover
version of some 22-P classic, but I forget which.
As there seems to be a lot of good new Finnish indie already out and
in the pipeline, I am thinking about compiling another tape for the
list, if there is interest. Hence I would appreciate if people would
go on commenting about what's good and what's not on the first tape.

According to chief@lysator.liu.se:
* On a side-note: Magnus (3rd on the Swedish Indie Tape Chain) thought
* that that chain was way too long and made an extra copy of the tape -
* and changed the chain into two chains.
Well that explains a couple of things, 1) why I got the tape so
quickly and 2) why it sounded like a dubbed tape :) I'm not
complaining, it was just an observation I made while listening through
it. BTW, I gave the tape to Sami a couple of days ago, maybe he has
already forwarded it?
In future it would be a good idea to split the chain into two sections
already from the start if there is a big number of participants -
right?

Subject: Homespun
Just one more quick note about a great EP I bought yesterday, by the
Finnish band Homespun (from Kouvola, if memory serves...??). The
four-track CD is called "Fabio Fitness And More" and it's the best
thing ever to come from Finland in the Sebadoh/Dinosaur Jr/
Pavement/The Bear Quartet/slacker/loser-indie category!!! Everybody
keeps saying that they sound very much like Sebadoh, I cannot really
say as my expertise in that particular field is sadly limited, but
what I thought of from the first moment was "Cosy Den" by TBQ - the
same kind of mumbled vocals especially. Homespun have a naturally full
and warm sound and good guitarwork as well, lots of little things
going on all the time under the surface.
Everybody who is into this kind of things should try to get hold of
this EP pronto, but that might prove to be difficult, since (as far as
I can see, which isn't really that far... :) they aren't giving us
either the band or label (Hipnose) address on the sleeve! I guess
somebody just forgot about it... :)
While I'm at it, I'd like second Erik's recommendation about the
Lemonator EP as well.
Over and out

Billboard will publish a review on the new Salt US single "So" (Island 7218)
on July 6th - and here, somewhat exclusive to Scandinavian Indie, is the
review they will publish:
Singles - Edited by Larry Flick
POP - Salt "So" 3:33
Producers: Dag Lundquist, Salt
Writers: Salt
Publisher: MCA, ASCAP
Island 7218 (CD single)
A strong track with instantly identifiable crossover possibilities.
Gentle and poppy enough for top 40 and AC stations and edgy enough
for modern rock, this could be the strongest single from the "Mis-
sion: Impossible" soundtrack. Distinctive vocals with muscular,
romantic guitar work contribute to a song that's dreamy while at
the same time grounded and solid from a technical standpoint. It
will be interesting to see where the threesome goes from here.

Sorry for this but I just had to write this or I would kick my brother
somewhere....
Well, tomorrow I'm going to that Vilsta-thing in Eskilstuna.
My brother told me earlier he was going too,
'cause my friends are so boring and don't like Yvonne.
But just a couple of minutes ago he told me he hates me,
and won't go, so that means I'll have to go alone. Such fun...
If you see a 17 year old girl, with parts of her hair (luggen) almost dyed
blueish-greenish-greyish, don't say Hi, I'm probably still angry
...or - hopefully - not angry at all, since I after all will see Yvonne.
Bye.

You're absolutely right. I did think of it for a brief moment, but
then I just didn't have the time to compile another tape, so I thought
it was best to at least send the one tape. Anyway, the next time...
And I'll be happy to comment on the Finnish tape, but I have to
receive it first! :-) And I still have the Icelandic tape to
comment on more thouroughly, I know!
By the way, that band, Homespun, sounds like something I would really like.
One must be able to find at least _some_ info about the label "Hipnose"
somewhere? Anyone searched the 'net? Anyone want to search the 'net? :-)
Maybe under "record companies/labels" in the Finnish phone book even?

else going there?
And what about Tr{stocksfestivalen (starts exactly two weeks from now!)?

Celeste, Dry Dive, Fidget, Fireside, Lemonator, Salt, Sandy Lyle,
Scandinavian Indie, Shallow Soundwave, Smash Hit Wonders, Sulky.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backfish - (AWSF), yes you read it right, changed their name from the old
Backfisch to Backfish a while ago because, they said, "we're
no girlscouts anymore". Their sound is the same though - so
if you're going to the Tr{stocksfestivalen (July 19-20) in
Skellefte}, you will be extremely sorry if you don't see them!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Beat Butchers - The Solar Lodge Contest is now closed and over! And the lucky
5 winners (who will receive a signed copy of The Solar Lodge's
latest CD "Fast Money Music" in the mail shortly) are....:
* P{r H{ggblad - Uppsala
* Dan Andersson - Brom|lla
* Mats Dahlberg - Ume}
* Magnus Lindhe - F{rgelanda
* Daniel Ondrejik - Fagersta
Congratulations! And to those who did not win this time, you
still have a chance to win a copy of the "Definitivt 50 Sp{nn
5" compilation CD! Check out the contest pages soon, because
that contest closes July 20th! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Blake Carringtons - have been working hard with a bunch of new songs and
material lately, and will put their soul, money and
time into a new demo, which is to be recorded during
August / September. Who sad that no news is good news!?
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Bob Hurts - (yes, you read this one right too), a Norwegian indie band with a
sound they describe themselves as "an American band trying to
sound like the Beatles" actually negotiated with Silence Records
(the swedish label that swedish band Bob Hund is signed to)
about a contract a while ago. They did not get one though, as
one of the reasons were that the label wanted the band to change
their name, strangely enough... (and the band did not want to do
that). (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Brandgul - (Beat Butchers) have spent a couple of days this summer recording
a new video. While recording it at a friend's house, his neighbor,
none other than Gothenburg ice-hockey team V{stra Fr|lunda's
goal keeper, stuck his head out the window and asked what they
were doing, and gladly accepted the invitation to join them,
fully dressed in his ice-hockey gear! The video includes breaking
of dishes, a goal keeper and body painted girls. Release is set
for the end of July. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Celeste - the swedish band from Stockholm have a song on a US compilation CD
released by label "Le Grand Magestrie" sometime this summer. The
CD is an "EL" tribute, and Celeste performs Louis Philippe's
"Every Word Meant Goodbye". The band usually consists of Jonas
Mann, Jari Haapalainen (Bear Quartet/Mary-Go-Round) and Erik
Domell|f (Seashells) in the studio, but on their latest session,
Jiri Novak (Cinnamon) has joined the band. The fruits from this
last session, four new songs, will probably be released as an EP
this coming autumn, but it is not yet decided on what label.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Dry Dive - 's album "Ass Hole As Possible", recently reviewed by Scandinavian
Indie, was only distributed (350 copies) to the bands' friends
by themselves, but will now be released on the label "Deaf And
Dumb" at the end of August. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Fidget - (Mega) signed Mega's contract last monday! The record company
agreed to everything the band wanted, which, for example, included
their own label, a "release no longer than six months after
recording" request and some money. The band went out to dine in
downtown Gothenburg with the label representatives afterwards
to celebrate. Their debut album will be recorded in August, and
it is planned to be released around November this year.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Fireside - (StartRec/American Recordings) are going on the Lollapalooza
tour in the US, starting July 18th and ending August 4th. You
probably knew that, didn't you. Right. What you might not know,
is that they are playing the second stage of the tour together
with Jonny Polonsky, Satchel, The Melvins, Sponge and Soul
Coughing. Jeff Eyrich (Salt's US manager) and Per Kviman (A&R at
MVG)'s management company, GreenTeam is taking care of the band
in the U.S. and American Recordings are working on dedicated pages
on their Web-site for Fireside as well. They might just be ready
today, so why not check http://american.recordings.com? The next
swedish bands brought under the wings of GreenTeam are rumored
to be The Drowners and Starlet. Lollapalooza tour dates coming
up next! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Lemonator - from Finland (recently reviewed by Scandinavian Indie as well)
will spend the summer playing at various festivals around
Finland. This means that their planned debut album has been
delayed, and will not be released until this autumn. The band is
also looking for record companies outside Finland interested in
working with the band (see contact address on the "Scandinavian
CD Reviews" web-pages). (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Salt - (MVG/Island) came back to Sweden on June 24th after ending their third
US tour this year on the 23rd in Minneapolis. Jim Tegman borrowed
Jeff Eyrich's laptop after the first gig on the tour and sent this
(edited version, in swedish only - sorry) message: "Hej Erik, Salt har
lika lyckad." And apparently the tour was a very good one. Right now,
the band is resting a bit - Nina Ramsby and Jim Tegman are spending
their vacation "not in Stockholm" though Daniel Ewerman decided to
stay in the city. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Sandy Lyle - from Stockholm (recently reviewed..) will play at Studion
in Stockholm on friday July 12th. Three bands are on the menu
that night - Sandy Lyle, Hollow Ground and a third band, not
yet decided. Tickets are 50 SEK, which you pay at the doors.
Be there before 21.00! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Scandinavian Indie - is starting to get pretty known on the net! Yay! :-)
The site has yet again been linked into IBM's AQUI - the
second time this year. Check out AQUI at URL:
http://www.aqui.ibm.com.
* A more surprising place to find Scandinavian Indie
is in the soc.culture.nordic FAQ for Sweden (part 7)!
There, under the title "e-mail addresses", it says:

unckelmin@utb.gov.se (Per Unckel, minister of education)

* And finally, Europe Online, a pan-European multilingual
online service on the web, for Europeans, by Europeans,
launched their preview of the Europe Online Swedish
service this week. I received an email sayin that "In
this site we include links to the top Swedish websites
in different categories." And they chose Scandinavian
Indie as one of the links! Europe Online can be found
at URL: http://www.europeonline.com.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Shallow Soundwave - are going into the studio in August to record a
new (24 channel!) demo! This was decided after the
band started to receive letters from several labels,
MVG, Momento Materia, MNW and Energy Rekords, all
wanting to hear more. The band will spend three days
in the studio, and hopefully, the demo will be out
at the end of August. Right now, drummer (and bass)
Nicolas Janco is spending his vacation together with
his girlfriend on Gotland. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Smash Hit Wonders - (Sun Spot) are recording their debut album in Gothenburg
right now. Producer is none other than Kent Norberg from
Sator. It is Kent's debut as single producer.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Sulky - from Gothenburg released an EP called "Knishes Shipped Free" on
Dolores Records recently. Sulky used to be called Sex Dwarfs,
before that Fiuggi. The band consists of Jan Skoglund, Henrik
Rylander, Adam Wladis (who all used to play in the extremely
well-known band Union Carbide Productions) and Anders Svensson
(from Eldarens Hus, who released a couple of records on Virgin
back in the 80's). You can read more about the band at URL:
